Troubleshooting
This page serves as a guide to help you go through common troubleshooting tips for the CANnect system. Please follow the steps carefully, and try one step at a time. If you have followed all steps and still have issues please reach out to SWYFT Support and we will try to assist you further.
Begin by unplugging all devices, including all CAN, power, and ethernet connections.
Bring up the Inject module.
Plug in CAN into the inbound CAN pair of the Inject.
Plug in power into the Inject.
Set the termination switch to ON.
Test your setup, at this point, only the LED on the Inject should light up, your CAN bus will not be functional.
Bring up 1 Direct module.
From the Inject / previous Direct, plug in the ethernet cable between devices.
Set the loopback switch on any other Direct to OFF, and set only this Direct's loopback switch to ON.
Test your setup, obviously devices not connected to the CAN bus will not work, but you can check the status of the CAN bus either on the CANivore, or in the Driver Station diagnostic tab. The Direct's power LED should also be lit.
Connect one CAN device at a time, make sure that both pairs coming from each device are as short as possible (required < 12", ideally shorter) and that both pairs are the same length.
Test your CAN setup after adding each device to ensure it is still working.
Repeat step 3 until all modules are brought online successfully.
If at any point your CAN bus begins to fail, try the following:
If your bus begins to fail when connecting on Direct module:
Note at which Direct module the bus begins to fail.
Disconnect any Direct modules between the failing module and the Inject.
Connect directly between the Inject and the failing Direct module
If the bus begins working again, then you likely have CAN connections which are too long or your bus is too long in general.
You can try terminating the CAN bus at the last Direct module as opposed to using the loopback feature
Set all loopback switch states to OFF
Cut open an ethernet cable, near one of the RJ45 connectors
Connect a 120 Ohm resistor between pins 1 & 2 (orange and orange-stripped pair)
Ensure no wires are shorted in the cut cable, if possible, remove the unused wires from the connector.
Plug the modified cable into the second port of the last Direct module, this should terminate the CAN bus and reduce the bus length significantly.
